Blocking Goalkeepers at Corners
|
Does it work?
I'm sure it must do now and then but I can't remember ever seeing it. In my experience it is more likely to end in a free kick to the keeper and even a disallowed goal.
I'm sure those with better memories than me will tell me about times it has worked for some clubs, but is it just not a bit of a idiotic tactic if it is more likely to end up as a free kick?
As I understand the rules if the blocker just stands his ground and doesn't attempt to go for the ball and the keeper does but is blocked, that is obstruction isn't it? So what is the point of it?

People block all the time at set pieces very rare for the referee to give a foul for it. It would only take a clampdown on it for a few weeks to put a stop to it.

We hear about how the criticism of Nolan upsets his dad, I'm old enough to be Nolan's dad so presume he must still be able to speak for himself, can we invite him to air his own views on why he thinks his son deserves a place in the team?

We had a goal disallowed in our last game because he is committing a foul.

Mr P. He can stand wherever he wants to. A goalkeeper has no right to run through a player, nor to have a clear run at the ball. As long as the player doesn't push the goalkeeper, he is not fouling, or obstructing. (see rule on obstruction-indirect free kick) What you are asking for is a new rule. 'Nobody must stand within 3 metres of a goalkeeper.' It isn't going to happen.

How dare you!! It's the only reason Nolan is in the side. We must keep up the keeper blocking or he will be completely redundant.

Tips
What Nolan does is blocking. He makes no attempt to get the ball, only to get in the way of the keeper

Totally agree, it's obstruction pure and simple. Before it was ignored by refs, the standard corner was an outswinger because it took the ball away from the keeper. Now no one gets penalised any more for obstruction (not just on corners, but all over the field) the routine corner is the inswinger because the keeper cannot leave his line.

Blocking and restricting, are entirely different things. The goalkeeper is not blocked. He can come off his line if he wants to. It's part of the game and always has been. Sam and Nolan never invented it, it's been going on for decades.

Blocking the keeper at corners is cheating and foul play, and it absolutely baffles me why refs don't give automatic free kicks for it. It's also one of the reasons I despise Allardyce and have little regard for Nolan. As someone said, this is just about all he can do now. As far as I can recall, Bolton under Allardyce were one of the first teams to employ this 'tactic'. I hated it then, and I hate it now.

Remember wardie smashing in a 30 yarder at old Trafford in league cup only to have it ruled out for indirect

Didn't say he couldn't give a yellow. But he can't give a free kick

Polite, the balls not in play yet, the ref goes over and has a few words with both teams who are all holding each other, one of the players calls the ref a cunt, you don't think he's going to get carded?

Good point.
I haven't seen an INdirect free kick given for yonks.
"And the referee, had given a free kick!!!! But wait, he seems to be indicating its indirect. Now what can west ham/Royston Rovers do from this?"

Ah Obstruction - there's a blast from the past. Can't remember the last time I saw that given. Seems to have been dropped to let people shield a ball and fend off the opposition as it runs out of play. Always looks like obstruction to me

In our case with Nolan, I think it's so he's right in the middle of the six yard box for any knock downs, deflections or second balls.
I think he's scored a few where there's been a downward header, deflection or loose ball in the 6 yard box.
I think it used to work more than it does now, though.
